Tape-In

Tape-in extensions are wefts, rather than individual strands, that use a medical grade adhesive tape to attach the extensions to the head. They’re typically preferred for their shorter installation time and flat, seamless appearance (when installed properly), and comfortable feel.

Tape-ins are particularly advantageous for thinner hair, especially when you use single-sided tape. They also tend to carry less risk of damage than fusion or glue-in extensions if your hair is consistently exposed to heat-based treatments. They also cut installation time in half for traditional sew in weaves, and doesn't require braiding or extra damage or tension to the scalp. The downside is, in some rare cases, using certain shampoos that contain sulfate, or alcohol based styling products can cause the adhesive can start to break down over time and you could experience slippage. If by chance that ever happens (which is very rare), consider Beaded Weft Extensions as a fantastic alternative. Beaded Weft Extensions are new - non damaging, seamless, invisible, innovative method that's taking the hair extension industry by storm! Plus they can be cut to the same size as tape-in extensions, making the feel and placement very similar.

Tape-In Hair Extensions: 101

Tape-in hair extensions are one of the most popular hair extension methods on the market, and there are a lot of reasons why. Between installation time, appearance, and reusability, tape-in extensions offer a lot of unique benefits that you just can’t get with other methods!

What Are Tape-In Hair Extensions?

First off, what is the tape-in method all about? It’s actually a slightly newer method of applying hair extensions, in which an adhesive (usually medical-grade) tape is used to attach the extension to the natural hair. It has rapidly become one of the preferred methods for both customers and stylists alike over the past decade, because of some of the key characteristics of the tape-in method.

Tape-in extensions come in wefts, not strands.

Tape-in hair is sold in wefts instead of individual strands. Since there is more hair on each weft, each piece covers a wider area of the head. If installed correctly, it has a flat, seamless finish that most traditional beads and links can’t always accomplish. Further, the wefts cause less overall strain than individual strand extensions, which makes them particularly great for thinner, more easily damaged hair. Installation time is also significantly less than fusion, or micro links. A full head installed by a certified extensionist can take as little as 2 to 3 hours.

Why tape?

Not all tape is created equally, but great tape is durable and strong, but also easy to remove without hair damage or a big mess. The benefit is the avoidance of glue, or heat that can be tedious to install. They are though, not nearly as easy and effortlessly maintained as our Beaded Wefts or Beaded Strand Methods. The maintenance appointment is a bit more involved with tape-in, due to having to completely remove the adhesive from the hair before re-installation, and the extensions have to re-taped as well.

How long do tape-in hair extensions last?

If tape-ins are cared for properly, they will last 6-10 months, but only if the hair is purchased from a reputable, professional company. We recommend moving the hair up every 8-12 weeks. The hair can be reused/re-taped at least 3 times, which gives the client 6 to 10 months between replacing the hair. There are all estimates based on lifestyle and how the hair is cared for. The quality of the hair plays a very big role in this. Tape-ins can be reused up to three times if removed and installed correctly, and although it’s an easier installation method than some of the others, it’s best to have a professional extensionist install and move them up.

How to Install Tape-In Hair Extensions

Again, while this is an easier method than others, we recommend having a professional extensionist do it for you (Glam Locks, of course)! Some important things to remember about the installation of tape-in extensions are:

*Start with clean hair. Shampoo, but NO conditioner before or directly after installation!

*We'll determine how much hair you need ahead of time to avoid not having enough hair to blend for a natural look. This is determined in our consultation. The average person needs 3 packs of hair for a full head.

Removing Tape-In Extensions

Just as important as installing the hair is removing it properly to avoid damage or general unpleasantness. Move-ups are much more time consuming than the actual installation, since you have to clarify and re-tape before installation. We recommend having two appointments each time you have the maintenance. One to remove, and one to reinstall. There will be tape residue present on your natural hair from the adhesive at the time of removal, and there will also be the shedding of your natural hair attached to it. This is combed out using a special tape in extension adhesive remover. This is time consuming and could become an annoyance, but long time tape-in wearers don't seem to mind considering the comfort and affordability.

How to Care for Tape-In Extensions

The rules of caring for tape-in hair extensions are the same as most others (as well as natural hair), but there are definitely some pro tips to keep in mind to make sure you get the most out of your new style.

*Wash & condition with sulfate-free products only!

*Whether it’s a treatment, shampoo, or anything else, apply it from the middle down to avoid weighing the hair down or any of that dreaded slippage.

*Try to air dry whenever possible, and use common sense when brushing. Go from the bottom up, use the right brush & leave-in conditioners, and try to avoid brushing when wet.

*Hold the bonds when brushing to avoid too much pull.

*Keep your buns and up-dos loose.

*Sleep with your hair in a loose braid or low ponytail.

*Always use a heat protectant before straightening, curling, or using any form of high heat.

*Do not apply styling products or heat tools directly on the bonds.
